J. Scott Fenwick is a developer and builder with more than four decades of experience in land development, construction and alternative building methods. His work spans residential and commercial development across Idaho and Oregon, with a sustained focus on off-grid, energy-efficient and recycled-material construction, alongside current involvement in international energy projects.
Alternative Construction and Sustainability
Fenwick has maintained a long interest in environmentally conscious building methods, developing subdivisions and commercial projects using techniques well outside conventional practice.
His work in this area has included a subdivision built off grid using solar power, recycled water and recycled car tires; rammed earth homes constructed from discarded tires; European Faswall block homes; timber frame homes built with recycled wood; homes constructed with insulated foam blocks; and panel construction homes. He was a joint venture partner with Idaho Power Company on Idaho’s first off-grid solar panel project.
He believes that smaller, energy-efficient communities represent the future of residential development, and is drawn to work that offers people a quality, efficient and livable environment.
Development Background
Fenwick began his real estate career in 1983 as an investor, purchasing and rehabilitating older properties in the North End of Boise. That work led to infill land purchase and development, and subsequently to the design and construction of custom homes as part of larger land development projects.
His projects have required extensive collaboration with state, county and city entities as well as professional contractors, and have included commercial work such as a complete shopping mall renovation and the rehabilitation of a senior community center.
